Electroencephalogram (EEG) Services

Norwich CT EEGs at Neurology Associates, Eastern Connecticut's Neurologists

The brain is a large electrical organ generating continuous electrical patterns that can be measured using scalp electrodes placed over the entire head and this is the basis of the EEG. These patterns vary normally with sleep, arousal, eye opening and closing and other variations in the environment, but they also vary pathologically. The EEG is used to look for abnormal patterns such as those seen in seizures and epilepsy.

The test can be done in a resting state, but the likelihood of finding an abnormality increases during sleep. As a result, your doctor may ask you to stay awake as much as possible the night before the test so you are more likely to fall asleep during the test. Strobe lights might be used during your test as this can help uncover abnormal brain waves, and the technologist may ask you to hyperventilate for similar reasons.

In preparation for your test, plan on an hour as the technologist has to place many electrodes over the entire scalp. The test itself usually takes about a half hour, though your doctor may order a longer one. Once the test is over, the technologist will need to take all the electrodes off again. A special paste is used to aid in conduction of the EEG signals and this will leave your hair a bit greasy until you are able to wash it.

For some patients, a prolonged recording may be needed and an overnight EEG may be ordered. Alternatively, an ambulatory EEG can be worn at home for a few days, usually over a weekend.
